The journey to the World Cup for Ecuador’s national football team is a testament to resilience and determination, with many of its stars emerging from challenging circumstances.
Players like Moises Caicedo, Jordy Caicedo, Joel Ordonez, and Nilson Angulo grew up on dusty pitches in impoverished neighborhoods, their childhood dreams centered on representing their country on the global stage.
Jordy Caicedo, 28, recalled his upbringing in Machala’s marginal areas, stating he was “a kid from the streets of Ecuador who basically had to cling to soccer to help my family move forward.” Similarly, Joel Ordonez, now 22 and playing for Club Brugge, had his family make significant sacrifices to allow him to pursue his training.
Perhaps the most well-known story is that of Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo, 24. His path began on a humble pitch known as “El Hueco” in Santo Domingo. His former youth coach, Galo Rodriguez, noted that the successful players were those who “always thought big, were very disciplined and worked for it.”
Players like Paris St-Germain’s Willian Pacho and Sunderland’s Nilson Angulo honed their skills in Quininde, a region near the Colombian border where football often represents a critical escape from poverty.
Pacho, who wears jersey number 51 in honor of his late mother, expressed his awe at achieving his aspirations, stating, “It’s a dream. I’m achieving things I once saw in other players.”
Coach Sebastian Beccacece attributes the team’s successful qualification, securing a second-place finish behind Argentina, to the players’ humility and strong family support, highlighting their remarkable “strength of spirit.”
Ecuador, making their fifth World Cup appearance, aims to surpass their previous best performance of reaching the round of 16 in 2006. The team will commence their Group E campaign against Ivory Coast on June 14.
