The City Oilers, a storied franchise in Ugandan basketball, have concluded their regular season with a formidable 20-2 record, signaling a strong resurgence and renewed confidence ahead of the upcoming National Basketball League playoffs. This impressive performance stands in stark contrast to the previous season, which saw the ten-time champions struggle and ultimately lose the championship after surrendering a significant lead.
Headlining their successful campaign was a 67-61 victory over Sommet, capping off a regular season that has been marked by consistency and a palpable increase in team chemistry. “We have had a solid season this year compared to the last with fewer downs and more ups,” stated head coach Andrew Tendo. “We have a great squad that is finally with great chemistry, something we lacked most of last season. A few of the players have matured in their roles and I am confident that we shall make some noise.”
A key factor in the Oilers’ turnaround has been a healthier roster and strategic acquisitions. Unlike last season, where injuries to key players like Titus Lual, Fayed Baale, and Edgar Munaba hampered their performance, the team has benefited from improved player availability. Furthermore, the club bolstered its ranks with experienced players like former MVP Landry Ndikumana and reigning MVP Joel Lukoji, alongside defensive specialist Joel Kayiira. Mid-season additions, including centre Jonathan Komagum and imports Patrick Rembert and Germain Roebuck Jr., are expected to provide crucial depth for the playoff push.
Supported by strong performances from Fayed Baale (averaging 14 points and four assists) and Titus Lual (averaging 10 points and nine rebounds), the Oilers have rediscovered the defensive intensity and teamwork that characterized their decade of dominance. Their ability to bounce back from their two regular-season losses and integrate new talent underscores their status as genuine contenders.
The Oilers’ 20-2 record is more than just a statistic; it reflects a team that has learned from past disappointments and rebuilt with a clear focus on reclaiming the championship title. With a healthier squad, enhanced chemistry, and impactful new additions, the City Oilers appear significantly better prepared to compete for the national title this season.
