The Uganda Rugby Premiership semifinals commenced with a somber atmosphere as teams and officials mourned the loss of Sydney Gongodyo, a prominent player whose life was cut short earlier in the week. The Buffaloes edged out Impis 20-11 in a match where a moment of silence and a palpable sense of grief marked the occasion.

Yassin Waiswa was the standout performer for Buffaloes, contributing 15 points through a try and successful kicks, guiding his team to a crucial first-leg advantage. Despite Impis scoring an early try, Buffaloes managed to narrow the deficit to 8-6 by halftime and then surged ahead in the second half with Waiswa’s try and conversion, followed by a late try from Kennedy Muhumuza.

The rugby community has been deeply affected by Gongodyo’s death, which is currently being investigated as a murder. The 27-year-old Makerere University student was a vital player for Stanbic Black Pirates, helping them clinch the 2025 Premiership title. Police have confirmed three suspects are in custody following an incident that reportedly involved mob action. The Uganda Rugby Union postponed the other semifinal between Black Pirates and Heathens to allow the grieving team time to cope.

Leaders within the sport, including URU president Godwin Kayangwe and Rugby Africa president Herbert Mensah, have paid tribute to Gongodyo, remembering him for his honor, discipline, and commitment.hundreds gathered at King’s Park Arena for a public viewing before his body was transported for burial at his ancestral home.
