The Netherlands national football team is heading into the 2026 World Cup with a blend of ambition and questions surrounding squad depth. While historically strong contenders, finishing as runners-up three times, the Dutch squad for this tournament features fewer standout global stars than in previous years.

Coach Ronald Koeman has openly stated his objective is to win the World Cup, a bold declaration given the perceived lack of elite individual talent. Key players like midfielder Frenkie de Jong have faced injury issues, and veteran striker Memphis Depay’s club form has declined. Concerns also linger over the current form of other important figures, including captain Virgil van Dijk and Tijjani Reijnders.

Adding to the challenges, injuries have ruled out attacking talent Xavi Simons and cast doubt on Jurrien Timber’s fitness. However, Koeman is emphasizing the strong team cohesion and experience within the squad, believing it can be a significant advantage.

“We have such a good feeling within the squad right now that I think we can get everything out of this tournament,” Koeman stated.

The Dutch secured their place in the finals comfortably, topping their qualifying group. They have been drawn in Group F, with their opening match against Japan on June 14 in Dallas, followed by games against Sweden and Tunisia.

Koeman has also demonstrated tactical flexibility, moving away from the strict adherence to the traditional “Hollandse school” of attacking football, a move that has sometimes drawn criticism but is seen as necessary to adapt and compete at the highest level.
