Germany, a nation with a storied history in international football, is setting its sights on a fifth World Cup crown. However, the shadow of their uncharacteristic first-round exits in 2018 and 2022 looms large, casting doubt on their title aspirations.
Coach Julian Nagelsmann, who took the reins in September 2023, has openly declared his ambition to lead Germany to victory. Despite reaching the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, the team has struggled to convince a skeptical public that they are among the elite contenders. Recent friendly matches have shown flashes of talent, particularly with a potent attacking trio, but have also been marked by inconsistency and last-minute victories.
Nagelsmann’s tenure has been characterized by frequent lineup changes, player injuries, and some off-pitch controversies that have alienated fans. A notable decision drawing criticism is the recall of 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who had not played for the national team since 2024, as the starting keeper for the upcoming tournament.
Veteran football figures, like Bayern Munich’s Uli Hoeness, have openly criticized Nagelsmann’s lack of consistency in team selection. “If Germany manage to become a cohesive team, even though the coach has never managed to field the same starting 11 twice in a row, then we have a chance,” Hoeness commented, placing blame squarely on the coach.
Despite the external pressure and internal doubts, Nagelsmann remains steadfast in his strategy, banking on his plans to yield success on the world stage. The coming tournament will be a true test of his resolve and Germany’s ability to regain its status as a global football powerhouse. Their journey begins in the co-hosted tournament across Mexico, Canada, and the United States.
