Ugandan farmers are facing unprecedented challenges, from shifting climate patterns and the emergence of new pests to declining soil health. These evolving conditions necessitate a greater role for agricultural extension workers and agro-input dealers, who are becoming essential guides for navigating modern farming complexities.
Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, highlights these professionals as “important frontline advisors.” Traditionally seen as mere suppliers of seeds, fertilizers, and machinery, their role is expanding significantly. As climate pressures mount, fertilizer costs fluctuate, and global supply chains show instability, agriculture demands a more informed approach.
Guidance on the appropriate use of pesticides and acaricides is paramount to prevent food contamination and protect biodiversity and the environment. Farmers also require advice on selecting resilient, fast-growing seeds, particularly those resistant to drought and diseases, to cope with erratic rainfall and water scarcity.
To address this, agricultural extension workers at the sub-county level need enhanced support and training. They must be equipped to reach farmers directly in their villages, offering vital education on soil health, climate-resilient practices, and the sustainable application of agrochemicals.
Furthermore, stringent measures are needed to ensure that agro-input shops are staffed by well-trained individuals capable of providing accurate advice. The volatility of global fertilizer markets, exacerbated by geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions, underscores the urgent need for informed decision-making and support for farming communities.
