President Yoweri Museveni officially commenced the construction of the Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District on Friday. This significant infrastructure project is anticipated to dramatically improve accessibility to the renowned Kidepo Valley National Park.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Museveni highlighted the multifaceted benefits the airport is expected to bring. “The airport will improve access to Kidepo Valley National Park, boost tourism, attract investors, create jobs for our young people and expand markets for local products,” he stated. Already, the project has provided employment for over 1,600 Ugandans, underscoring its immediate economic impact.

The President also reflected on the transformation of the Karamoja region, noting the transition from a past marked by insecurity and lawlessness to a period of peace conducive to development. This newfound stability is seen as a crucial factor for the region’s progress.

Financing for the Shs269 billion project is being provided by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates, acknowledging the substantial investment opportunities available in Uganda and across the African continent. The airport’s planned facilities include an impressive 3.6-kilometer runway, a 7,408-square-meter passenger terminal, and a 74,200-square-meter cargo terminal.

Kidepo Valley National Park, described by the Uganda Wildlife Authority as one of Africa’s most stunning wilderness areas, is Uganda’s most remote park. Situated in the semi-arid Karamoja region, it borders both South Sudan and Kenya. The park is celebrated for its diverse wildlife, including over 77 mammal species and 476 bird species, as well as its unique landscapes.
