Parliament is set to champion the government’s ambitious strategy for economic expansion, aiming for a tenfold increase in Uganda’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to US$500 billion by the year 2040. This commitment was formally declared by Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth.

Speaking at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds on Thursday, June 4, 2026, Oboth conveyed the Parliament’s unwavering support for programs geared towards accelerating the nation’s economic transformation. “On behalf of the 12th Parliament and on my own behalf, we affirm our commitment to the realisation of government’s ten-fold growth strategy, designed to expand the country’s GDP,” he stated, echoing the government’s expansive vision.

The Speaker’s remarks were made in the context of President Yoweri Museveni’s State of the Nation Address. This annual address, mandated by Article 101(1) of the Constitution, serves to outline governmental achievements, acknowledge prevailing national challenges, and present future policy and legislative priorities.

Oboth took the opportunity to encourage newly elected Members of Parliament to prioritize service delivery and remain steadfast in fulfilling their electoral promises. “I implore you to bear in mind that an election victory is only the foundation of leadership. What follows is the hefty responsibility of governance, fulfilling campaign promises and ensuring social cohesion,” he advised.

He also highlighted the particular importance of the 2026 address, marking it as the first of five such addresses expected during the current presidential term. Due to public health concerns regarding the Ebola outbreak, attendance at the ceremony was limited to Members of Parliament as a precautionary measure.

The resolutions stemming from the debate on the State of the Nation Address will be forwarded to the President at a later date.
