President Yoweri Museveni has officially broken ground for the construction of Kidepo International Airport, located in Karenga District. This ambitious project is poised to be a catalyst for economic growth, significantly boosting tourism, trade, and investment opportunities within the Karamoja sub-region.

The substantial USD 72 million project is being financed by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates. Key features of the new airport will include a 3.6-kilometer runway, a 7408 square meter passenger terminal, and an expansive 74200 square meter cargo terminal, positioning it as a major aviation hub.

During the launch ceremony, President Museveni highlighted the immense potential of Kidepo Valley National Game Park, emphasizing how the new international airport will unlock investment and attract visitors. He noted a transformation from past perceptions of the area to its current role as a prime investment destination, stating, “Now, Kidepo, which you wanted to destroy with goats, sheep and donkeys, is now bringing you this investment here, an airport like Entebbe Airport.”

The President also lauded the Karenga District communities for their generous donation of land for the airport project, assuring them of substantial returns through increased tourism, wildlife conservation, and trade. He urged the people of Karamoja to diversify their economic activities beyond traditional practices, pointing to the global growth in sectors like services, commercial agriculture, manufacturing, and ICT.

His Excellency Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, detailed the project’s phased implementation and acknowledged the current employment of 1,620 Ugandans. Local leaders from Karamoja reported a positive investment climate in the region, attributing it to the restoration of peace and stability following the disarmament of cattle rustlers.

This development signifies a major step forward for regional connectivity and economic diversification in northeastern Uganda.
