The development of Kidepo International Airport has officially commenced, marked by a groundbreaking ceremony in Karenga district. President Yoweri Museveni, who presided over the event, highlighted the project as a symbol of Karamoja’s transformation from a region historically challenged by insecurity and lawlessness to one poised for development.

The new airport is anticipated to substantially improve access to the renowned Kidepo Valley National Park, a key driver for enhancing tourism in the area. Beyond tourism, the facility is expected to attract investors, create employment opportunities for the local youth, and broaden market access for regional products. Currently, over 1,600 Ugandans are reportedly employed in the construction phase.

This venture is the result of a memorandum of understanding between the Ugandan government and the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry from the United Arab Emirates. The airport, situated at Lomej near the park headquarters, is planned as a Code 4E international facility with a 3,000-meter runway, capable of accommodating large wide-body aircraft. Technical studies, feasibility assessments, and environmental impact evaluations have been completed, confirming the chosen site’s suitability.

Construction activities are already underway, including the development of access roads necessary for logistical support. Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of balancing infrastructure development with the conservation of the surrounding wildlife and environment. The project is seen as a critical step in unlocking Kidepo Valley National Park’s tourism potential, which has historically seen lower visitor numbers despite its global appeal.

Discussions have also touched upon broader aviation development strategies for the Karamoja region, including potential upgrades to other airstrips. However, concerns have been raised regarding the existing road infrastructure, with calls for expedited upgrades to facilitate ongoing construction and improve regional connectivity.
