The Uganda Volleyball Cranes faced a disappointing defeat against Kenya’s Wafalme Stars in a crucial match for the 2026 CAVB Nations Championship qualifiers. The home crowd at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium witnessed a strong performance from the Kenyan side, who secured a commanding 3-0 victory.
Despite high expectations for a close contest between two previously unbeaten teams, Uganda struggled to find its rhythm. Issues with passing precision, unforced service errors, and a porous net defense hampered the Cranes’ efforts throughout the match. Kenya capitalized on these weaknesses, dictating the pace and preventing Uganda from building any sustained momentum.
Kenya’s aggressive serving repeatedly troubled Uganda’s reception, disrupting their offensive plays. While Uganda’s coach made several substitutions in an attempt to inject new energy, Kenya maintained composure. Middle blocker Brian Kamonde’s serves and Levis Ogutu’s powerful attacks proved particularly effective for the visitors.
The first set saw Kenya comfortably take a 25-17 lead. Uganda fought back valiantly in the second, matching Kenya point for point for much of the set, but ultimately fell 26-24. In the third set, despite a spirited challenge from the Cranes, Kenya’s superior execution in critical moments, orchestrated by captain Brian Melly, secured the set 25-22 and the match.
This loss marks Uganda’s first of the tournament and significantly complicates their path to the continental championship. Kenya now sits in a strong position, moving closer to securing the sole qualification spot. The Cranes must now regroup and aim for a strong finish to their campaign, starting with their next match against Tanzania.
