The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) is set to enlist 10,200 new personnel across the country in a recruitment drive spanning June and July 2026. The exercise places a particular emphasis on candidates holding Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) qualifications, with a clear preference for those with a background in science subjects.

This recruitment initiative follows a directive from the Office of the President, based on a request from Chief of Joint Staff Lt Gen Jack Agonza Bakasumba. Local government leaders, including Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), have been tasked with mobilizing eligible youth and facilitating the recruitment process at designated centers.

Recognizing the importance of transparency, the UPDF has implemented new safeguards to combat the corruption, favoritism, and bribery that have plagued previous enlistment drives. A phased process, including online applications from June 10-24 and phased physical recruitment starting July 20, is designed to improve coordination and national participation.

The UPDF’s appeal for applicants is expected to be amplified by recent significant salary enhancements for lower-ranking soldiers. A Private’s monthly salary is set to increase from Shs650,000 to Shs828,426, while a Corporal will now earn close to Shs1 million monthly. This makes military service a more financially attractive prospect for many young Ugandans.

Special attention will be given to the Kampala Metropolitan Area, with specific interview dates and locations designated for successful applicants from various divisions and constituencies within Kampala and Wakiso District. This approach aims for broader representation and fairness.

The UPDF plans to issue a detailed briefing on the recruitment process at the Uganda Media Centre. Candidates are advised to adhere strictly to the prescribed guidelines and requirements.
