While women in Uganda occupy significant ministerial roles, including at the helm of the education and health dockets, a recent commentary suggests the feminist movement must look beyond these visible advancements to truly empower all women.

The author points out that despite these high-profile positions, a substantial portion of Ugandan women continue to grapple with systemic challenges, particularly in rural communities. Issues such as limited access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, and persistent gender-based violence remain deeply entrenched outside of urban centers.

The commentary argues that a more holistic approach is necessary. This involves not only celebrating the achievements of women in leadership but also actively working to dismantle the barriers that prevent women in villages and remote areas from reaching their full potential. True feminist progress, it is suggested, hinges on uplifting the most marginalized segments of society.

There’s a call for feminists to engage more directly with the grassroots, understanding and advocating for the specific needs of rural women. This includes championing policies that address land rights, agricultural support, and access to essential services, which are crucial for the economic and social well-being of women in these areas.

The piece urges a shift in focus from solely parity in high-level governance to a broader agenda that ensures tangible improvements in the daily lives and opportunities for all Ugandan women, regardless of their geographical location.
