Legislators of the 12th Parliament convened at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for their inaugural sitting, a crucial session to elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker. The election for the top parliamentary position is being conducted via a secret ballot, with Chief Justice Flavian Zeija overseeing the proceedings.
Three candidates are vying for the Speaker’s role: Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, nominated by Hon. Jessica Alupo and seconded by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze; Hon. Paul Mwiru, nominated by Hon. Hassan Kirumira as the opposition’s choice; and Hon. Norbert Mao, nominated by Hon. Peter Okot.
Chief Justice Zeija informed the assembled Members of Parliament that 370 individuals are eligible to cast their votes. Once the new Speaker is declared, they will assume the role of presiding officer to oversee the subsequent election of the Deputy Speaker.
This marks the first official meeting of the 12th Parliament, following the swearing-in ceremony of its members last week. The outcome of this election will set the tone for the legislative agenda and leadership of the new parliamentary term.
