Uganda observed Martyrs’ Day largely within local parishes and dioceses this year, as authorities and religious leaders opted to limit large public gatherings due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak. The traditional pilgrimage to the Namugongo shrine was replaced with special prayer services held in churches from Arua to Kabale, and Lira to Masaka.
Clergy across the country urged worshippers to draw strength and courage from the steadfastness of the 45 Uganda Martyrs, who were killed for their faith between 1885 and 1887. They also emphasized the importance of adhering to Ebola prevention measures and cooperating with health officials.
In Arua Diocese, religious leaders encouraged unwavering faith amidst trials, while Bishop Severus Jjumba of Masaka Diocese reminded congregants not to lose hope, drawing parallels to past disruptions like the Covid-19 pandemic. Leaders also used the occasion to speak out against corruption and tribalism, urging national unity and accountability.
The shift to local celebrations provided an unexpected opportunity for some Christians to reconnect with their immediate faith communities. While some had planned to travel to Namugongo for specific intentions, they redirected their prayers to local altars. The day’s celebrations underscored a collective commitment to faith, resilience, and public health.
