Traders and business owners around the Namugongo Catholic and Anglican shrines are counting substantial losses following the government’s decision to cancel the traditional national Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. The annual event, which usually draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, was restricted this year as a precautionary measure against the spread of the Ebola virus.

Many vendors and hospitality operators had invested heavily in stock and securing selling spaces, anticipating the usual influx of visitors. However, the scaled-down celebrations meant significantly lower customer turnout, leaving many with unsold merchandise and prepaid stall fees. Denis Abada, who runs a recreation centre near the shrine, noted that his business typically earns around Shs20 million during this period but has seen bookings cancelled due to the restrictions.

Similarly, food vendors like Rashida Nalongo, who prepared large quantities of food, are facing losses and struggling to cover their expenses, including school fees. Temporary vendors, such as chapati seller Rosette Namugga, reported paying non-refundable fees for trading spaces and are now committed to paying hired workers despite the lack of business.

Local leaders, while acknowledging the economic hardship, emphasized the necessity of the public health measures. Isaac Lumanyika, chancellor of Namugongo Buloli, stated that the restrictions were crucial to protect public health from potential Ebola transmission, especially given recent cases in neighboring countries. He expressed hope for a full return of the pilgrimage next year if health conditions improve.

The Uganda Martyrs Day commemoration, honoring Christian converts executed in the late 19th century, is a major religious event in East Africa, attracting pilgrims from Uganda and neighboring nations.
