Switzerland is making its sixth consecutive appearance at the World Cup, a testament to their consistent qualification record. However, this consistency has been overshadowed by a recurring “hoodoo” of being eliminated in the round of 16, a fate they’ve faced in five of their last six tournaments.

Despite this historical pattern, the Swiss squad is brimming with belief following a successful Euro 2024 campaign and an unbeaten qualifying run. Coach Murat Yakin has publicly stated the team’s ambition to “play the best World Cup that a Swiss team has played” and “write a new story at this World Cup.”

Known for being a difficult team to break down, Switzerland’s defensive strength is a key asset, having conceded only two goals during qualifying. With a favourable draw in Group B alongside Qatar, Bosnia, and co-hosts Canada, an advance to the knockout stages appears probable.

The team boasts a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talent. Captain Granit Xhaka will participate in his fourth World Cup, anchoring an experienced midfield alongside Remo Freuler, while Manuel Akanji provides a solid defensive foundation.

Upfront, players like Breel Embolo and Ruben Vargas will be supported by emerging talents such as Premier League’s Dan Ndoye and Noah Okafor, as well as Bundesliga’s Johan Manzambi. Coach Yakin’s tactical acumen will be crucial in their quest to reach the quarter-finals, a feat last achieved by the Swiss in 1954.

While the coach remains cautious, focusing on a step-by-step approach rather than looking too far ahead, the underlying sentiment is one of optimism. Switzerland is determined to finally make a significant impact on the global stage and leave behind the ghosts of past second-round exits.
