Parliament Approves Alupo and Nabbanja for Second Terms as Vice President and Premier

Lawmakers in the Ugandan Parliament have given the green light for Hon. Jessica Alupo and Hon. Robinah Nabbanja to serve a second term in their respective high-profile positions. The appointments, requiring parliamentary approval under Article 108 of the Constitution, were confirmed by a simple majority vote during a session chaired by the new Speaker, Rt Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth.

Honed. Ephraim Kamuntu, representing Sheema South, moved the motion to approve Vice President Alupo, highlighting her extensive leadership experience. He cited her previous roles as Minister for Education and Sports, State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, and her background in military instruction, describing her as a dedicated, transformative leader and patriot.

Kampala Central’s representative, Hon. Minsa Kabanda, who seconded the motion, commended Alupo for her adept representation of the President and Uganda on both domestic and international stages, including high-level summits like the UN General Assembly and BRICS meetings. She emphasized Alupo’s crucial role in projecting Uganda’s voice globally.

Prime Minister Nabbanja also received praise for her hands-on approach and commitment during her previous term. Lira City Woman MP, Hon. Ruth Aceng, who presented the motion for Nabbanja’s approval, noted her effective coordination of the COVID-19 response and her efforts in delivering relief during natural disasters. Aceng also lauded Nabbanja’s performance in Parliament, particularly her engagement in answering ministerial questions and tabling government business.

Following their approval, Vice President Alupo expressed gratitude and pledged continued commitment to service, urging colleagues to focus on unity and the vision of wealth and job creation. Prime Minister Nabbanja reiterated her commitment to strengthening the executive-legislature link and ensuring responsive service delivery.

In related proceedings, the House acknowledged the reappointment of Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi as Leader of the Opposition and Hon. Paul Mwiru as Chief Opposition Whip, underscoring the importance of parliamentary oversight in keeping the government accountable. The Speaker was also urged to uphold principles of fairness and actively combat corruption.
