The 12th Parliament has new leadership following elections held at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds. West Budama Central County MP, Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, emerged victorious as Speaker, securing 441 votes. His election was presided over by Chief Justice Flavian Zeija during the Parliament’s inaugural session, attended by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Oboth, nominated by Hon. Jessica Alupo and seconded by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, expressed gratitude for his victory, emphasizing divine timing and perseverance. He pledged to serve all members, regardless of how they voted, describing the role as a “servant’s post.” Oboth outlined seven pillars for his leadership, including zero tolerance for corruption, enhanced accountability, evidence-based debate, and a people-centred approach.
Meanwhile, Thomas Tayebwa, representing Ruhinda North County, was elected Deputy Speaker, garnering 457 votes. He defeated Hon. Asinansi Nyakato and Hon. Sarah Aguti. Tayebwa pledged to serve with fairness and humility, committing to collaborate closely with Speaker Oboth.
President Museveni congratulated the newly elected leaders and cautioned against complacency. He urged leaders to prioritize citizens’ interests and hold those who fail to deliver services accountable. The President also stressed the importance of monitoring government funds for wealth creation programs, warning ministers against inaction and emphasizing the need for effective resource utilization to combat poverty and create jobs.
The Parliament is set to reconvene on June 4, 2026, for the President’s State-of-the-Nation Address. This indicates a new term focused on leadership, accountability, and tangible results for the Kenyan people.
