New Speaker Oboth Pledges Diligence and Equity for 12th Parliament

The newly elected Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, Jacob Marksons Oboth, has laid out his vision for his tenure, promising a leadership characterized by “diligence, fairness, and equity.” Speaking during his maiden plenary sitting on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Oboth asserted his commitment to supporting the Members of Parliament.
“As your Speaker, I bear a profound obligation to elevate and empower all of you to effectively execute your mandate of representation, oversight, legislation and appropriation,” he stated. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and the parliamentary leadership by the lawmakers.
Oboth, who also chairs the Parliamentary Commission, the highest decision-making body within Parliament, committed to fostering a conducive working environment. “I will ensure a favorable environment for evidence-based legislation and responsiveness to the aspirations of the masses that we represent,” he declared.
The Speaker urged his fellow legislators to remain accessible to their constituents and to prepare thoroughly for their parliamentary duties. He also called for “humility and modesty” as the Parliament strives to become a more “people-centred legislature.”
Oboth and his Deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, were elected to their positions on May 25, 2025. This maiden sitting marks the beginning of their leadership for the 12th Parliament.
