The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has stepped in to support citizens affected by widespread demolitions aimed at restoring wetlands across the country. The organization is actively gathering information from victims to pursue compensation for their destroyed properties.

Arthur Isiko, Treasurer of ULS, stated that the society is offering free legal advice and assistance to those displaced. ULS plans to compile details such as land purchase agreements and other relevant particulars to file court cases on behalf of the victims, emphasizing that the Constitution mandates court orders before property destruction.

Many residents, particularly in areas like Buggu Village, Wakiso District, claim they received no prior warning from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) before their homes were demolished. Some affected individuals reported attending a meeting with NEMA and local leaders in May, where it was allegedly agreed that demarcation of wetland boundaries would occur later in June. However, enforcement teams arrived earlier, leading to a hurried eviction.

Residents expressed feelings of betrayal and distress, with some facing homelessness following the abrupt actions. Local leaders have urged NEMA to halt the evictions and honor prior commitments, suggesting that preventative measures to stop illegal construction in wetlands should be prioritized over demolitions after investments have been made.

NEMA, through its communications officer William Lubuulwa, stated that occupants had been warned about vacating wetlands since 2024 and that while unaware of the specific May meeting mentioned by residents, affirmed that enforcement actions are taken when directives are ignored.
