Czech Republic Banks on Physicality to Navigate World Cup Group A
Under new coach Miroslav Koubek, the Czech Republic aims for World Cup qualification through a physically dominant and pragmatic style of play, emphasizing defense and set pieces over flair. The team, lacking previous star power, will rely on 'winning ugly' to overcome more technically gifted opponents in Group A. The Czech Republic’s national football team is gearing up for the World Cup with a strategy heavily reliant on grit and physicality, largely shaped by coach Miroslav Koubek. Taking charge after a surprising qualifying defeat, Koubek led the team through playoffs to secure a spot in the upcoming tournament in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Unlike their 2006 World Cup squad, which boasted creative talents like Tomas Rosicky and Pavel Nedved, this iteration of the Czech team is expected to adopt a more combative approach. The focus will be on grinding out results through disciplined, physical play rather than dazzling technical skill.
“I don’t expect an attractive style of play from the team but rather disciplined and combative play focused on quick counter-attacks and set pieces,” commented soccer expert Stanislav Levy. He believes this pragmatic, though not always aesthetically pleasing, approach could be the key to progressing from Group A.
The team’s campaign begins against South Korea, followed by matches against South Africa and co-host Mexico. While organizational discipline and strength will be paramount, there are individuals capable of providing attacking sparks. Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, a joint top scorer at Euro 2020, leads the line, supported by the in-form Hoffenheim striker Adam Hlozek and attacking midfielder Pavel Sulc. The return of West Ham’s Tomas Soucek to midfield, alongside the experienced Vladimir Darida, provides a solid central presence, anchored by a robust defense featuring Ladislav Krejci and Vladimir Coufal, with Matej Kovar in goal.
