After a 36-year hiatus, Canada re-entered the World Cup stage in 2022, marking their return with Alphonso Davies’ historic first goal. Now, as co-hosts of the 2026 tournament, the Canadian men’s national team aims to build on that momentum and achieve a significant breakthrough.

While not yet among the global elite, Canada’s squad, under the guidance of coach Jesse Marsch, is confident in its ability to compete. Marsch led the team to the Copa America semi-finals in 2024, showcasing the team’s growing potential. Winger Tajon Buchanan expressed this optimism, stating, “On our day, I think we could beat anybody.”

Canada faces what appears to be a manageable Group B, opening their campaign on June 12 against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Toronto. They will then play Qatar in Vancouver on June 18, followed by Switzerland on June 24.

Key to Canada’s hopes is the dynamic duo of Davies and Jonathan David. However, Davies, the team captain, has faced significant injury challenges, including an ACL tear and multiple hamstring issues, raising concerns about his match fitness. Despite these setbacks, his presence is vital.

Jonathan David, Canada’s all-time leading men’s scorer and a forward for Juventus, carries the weight of expectation for goals. He emphasized the team’s immediate goals: “First, we need to make sure we score. And then to win a match would be momentous for Canada. After that, the aim is obviously to go as far as possible in the competition.”

Canada’s journey in this World Cup is about more than just participation; it’s about redefining their standing in international football on home soil. They are determined to reach the knockout rounds for the first time, aiming to create lasting memories for their fans.
