The Uganda Volleyball Cranes are on a winning streak at the CAVB Zone V Nations Championship Qualifiers, having secured a hard-fought 3-0 victory against South Sudan on Tuesday night. This win follows their earlier triumph over Burundi, keeping their qualification hopes firmly alive.

The match, held at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium, saw the Cranes take the first set with relative ease, 25-13. However, South Sudan, featuring familiar faces from Ugandan volleyball, mounted a strong comeback in the second and third sets.

Despite facing a resilient South Sudanese side that pushed the game beyond regulation points (26-24, 29-27), Uganda’s composure in crucial moments and strategic substitutions, including the impactful introduction of Daudi Okello, proved decisive.

Head coach Shilla Omuriwe expressed her satisfaction with the team’s ability to close out the match without extending it. “I am glad we were able to hold on and not play another set,” she stated.

The Cranes now prepare for a demanding period, facing four consecutive matches over four days. Their next significant challenge will be against regional rivals Kenya on Wednesday evening, a fixture anticipated to be their most difficult test in the tournament thus far.

Earlier results saw Burundi secure their first win by defeating Tanzania 3-1. The tournament continues with various men’s and women’s matchups on Wednesday, culminating in the highly anticipated clash between Uganda and Kenya.
