Uganda’s government has issued a strong reassurance to both domestic and international travellers, affirming that the nation remains a safe destination despite recent developments concerning the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD).
The Ministry of Health reported six new cases of EVD, marking the highest single-day increase since the outbreak was declared on May 15. This brings the total cumulative caseload to 15, with one recorded death.
Dr. Charles Olaro, Director General of Health Services, stated that the health authorities are “on top of the game” in managing the situation. He emphasized that all known contacts of Ebola patients are under quarantine and being monitored, with some individuals placed on a no-fly list. “The ones we have in our treatment unit are improving, and we are discharging them,” Dr. Olaro commented, adding, “Uganda is still safe; you can come to Uganda and return to your country Ebola-free.”
Dr. Olaro highlighted Uganda’s extensive experience in managing Ebola outbreaks, expressing confidence that the current situation will be controlled swiftly. He urged the public and healthcare workers to strictly adhere to preventive measures advised by the ministry.
The current outbreak was declared after a Congolese national succumbed to the disease in a Kampala hospital. Subsequent surveillance efforts identified more cases among Congolese nationals who had received treatment in Ugandan health facilities. Over 100 health workers were identified as contacts, with a few testing positive while in quarantine. The incubation period for the virus is between 2 to 21 days.
As of June 2, at least 12 patients were undergoing treatment at the Mulago Ebola treatment centre, with two having already recovered and been discharged. Dr. Olaro indicated that measures such as border closures with the DR Congo and enhanced community sensitization and contact tracing are bringing the country closer to containing the outbreak. “I want to assure the country and the world that we will get this outbreak under control as soon as possible,” he stated.
