Uganda Christian University (UCU) is playing a pivotal role in orchestrating the Anglican commemorations for Martyrs’ Day in Namugongo. A dedicated team of academics, administrators, and church leaders from the university are at the helm, managing everything from fundraising and infrastructure to the welfare of pilgrims.

Professor John Mulindwa Kitayimbwa, UCU’s Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chairperson of the Martyrs’ Day Organising Committee, is leading the charge. With a background that spans mathematics, computational biology, and ordained ministry, Prof. Kitayimbwa brings a unique blend of analytical and spiritual leadership to the event.

Assisting him is David Mugawe, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration and co-chairperson. Mugawe’s responsibilities include overseeing the Finance and Fundraising Sub-Committee and coordinating security. His focus is on enhancing safety, sanitation, and the overall environment at the Anglican Martyrs’ Site.

UCU Vice Chancellor, Professor Aaron Mushengyezi, serves as the patron of the organising committee. A seasoned academic with extensive experience at Makerere University, Prof. Mushengyezi is crucial in coordinating efforts between UCU, government bodies, and the Church of Uganda.

The spiritual guidance for the event comes from Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu, the Chancellor of UCU and spiritual head of the Anglican Church in Uganda. He has entrusted UCU with the organization of the celebrations, providing oversight and direction.

Bishop Alfred Olwa, Bishop of Lango Diocese and Chairperson of the UCU Governing Council, is also a key figure. He has overseen significant infrastructural developments at the Martyrs’ Site, aimed at improving pilgrim experience and safety.

This collective leadership, a fusion of academic prowess, administrative acumen, and profound faith, ensures that the Anglican Martyrs’ Day celebrations are well-organized, secure, and spiritually meaningful for all attendees. Their efforts underscore UCU’s commitment to facilitating significant religious events while navigating contemporary challenges.
