A somber mood has enveloped Lwengo District following a fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two Christian pilgrims. Josephine Nakitto, 83, and Alex Ssenono, 25, who was riding the motorcycle, were en route to Mbiriizi Catholic Parish to commemorate Uganda Martyrs Day when their journey tragically ended.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning around 9 am in Kyetume Village. Eyewitness accounts suggest that a speeding government-owned Toyota Hilux vehicle veered off the road and struck the motorcycle carrying the two individuals. One victim died instantly, while the other succumbed to their injuries while being transported to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.
Greater Masaka Regional Police spokesperson, Mr. Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the fatalities and stated that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene, and authorities are seeking information regarding their whereabouts.
The bodies of Nakitto and Ssenono have been transferred to the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations. In light of the recurring accidents in the area, Lwengo Rural Sub-county Chairperson, Kizito Lawrence, has urged the government to implement enhanced road safety measures. He specifically called for the installation of additional warning signs, particularly at dangerous bends, and the enforcement of speed limits to prevent future tragedies.
