A tragic road accident in Lwengo District has cast a shadow over preparations for the annual Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations. Two devout Christians, Josephine Nakitto, 83, and Alex Ssenono, 25, were fatally struck by a speeding vehicle while en route to attend Mass at Mbiriizi Catholic Parish.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning around 9 am in Kyetume Village. Eyewitnesses reported that a government-registered Toyota Hilux, traveling at high speed, swerved off the road and collided with the motorcycle carrying the two individuals. One victim died instantly, while the other succumbed to their injuries en route to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital.

The rider of the motorcycle has been identified as Alex Ssenono, who was also a resident of Bugonzi Village, where Josephine Nakitto also resided. The driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police have confirmed the incident and have initiated investigations into the precise cause of the crash. The bodies have been moved to the Masaka Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

Local leaders have voiced concerns about road safety in the area. The Chairperson of Lwengo Rural Sub-county, Kizito Lawrence, highlighted that the location of the accident is known for a dangerous curve. He appealed to the government to erect additional road signage, especially warning signs at bends, and to implement stricter speed control measures along this stretch of road, citing a history of accidents in the vicinity.

This unfortunate event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on Ugandan roads, even as citizens undertake pilgrimages to honor significant religious occasions.
