In Buwama, along the Kampala-Masaka highway, the Centre for the Visually Impaired Children (CEVIC) educates over 100 students who learn through Braille, touch, sound, and memory. For years, the girls at CEVIC faced an additional challenge: sharing dormitory facilities with the boys due to limited resources.
This situation changed thanks to the Rotary Club of Buziga, which funded and built a new girls’ dormitory. This intervention provides the female learners with a safer, more private, and dignified living space, which can positively influence their concentration, comfort, and overall learning experience.
The construction of the dormitory was a key achievement during the tenure of outgoing Rotary Club of Buziga President Gilbert Amanya. At the club’s recent Charter Night, where Beatrice Sekabembe Juuko was installed as the new president and the club’s first female leader, the dormitory project was highlighted as a practical example of community service making a tangible difference.
Amanya emphasized the commitment to service and the collective effort of Rotarians in achieving such projects. Incoming President Juuko acknowledged the responsibility of leadership and outlined plans for the club’s future, including a crucial initiative to acquire ten additional Braille machines for CEVIC.
The current shortage of Braille machines at CEVIC limits student participation and learning. The acquisition of more machines is expected to significantly improve literacy and classroom engagement for the visually impaired learners. This project, championed by the Rotary Club of Buziga, underscores how targeted community service can address fundamental needs and reshape lives.
