The Catholic Diocese of Kasese, established in 1989, is celebrating a significant milestone coinciding with Uganda Martyrs’ Day, marked by the dedicated leadership of its two bishops. Since its inception, carved out from the Diocese of Fort Portal, Kasese has been steered by Bishop Emeritus Egidio Nkaijanabwo and the current Ordinary, Bishop Francis Aquirinus Kibira.

Their combined 37 years of service have been instrumental in fostering the growth of Catholicism across Kasese District, bolstering evangelization efforts, educational institutions, and social services within the Rwenzori sub-region.

Bishop Francis Kibira, born in 1958, hails from a devout Catholic family with roots tracing back to early catechists in western Uganda. After extensive philosophical and theological studies, including a First Class Honours degree in Theology from Rome, he was ordained a priest in 1984. He further pursued advanced studies in Sacred Scripture, mastering several ancient and modern languages, and even celebrated Mass with Pope John Paul II. Appointed Bishop of Kasese in 2014, he succeeded Bishop Nkaijanabwo.

Bishop Emeritus Egidio Nkaijanabwo, born in 1935, felt called to the priesthood early in life. After theological training in England, he was ordained in 1961. He served in the Diocese of Fort Portal through challenging political times, contributing significantly to priestly formation and church administration. In 1989, he was appointed the founding Bishop of Kasese, leading it for 25 years. During his tenure, he initiated numerous projects, including the construction of a new cathedral.

Upon Bishop Nkaijanabwo’s retirement in 2014, Bishop Kibira took the helm. Both prelates, through their distinct yet complementary leadership, have profoundly shaped the Catholic faith and community in the Rwenzori region, leaving a lasting legacy.
