Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo will adopt a different format this year, prioritizing health and safety in light of the ongoing Ebola outbreak. Both the Catholic and Anglican sites are implementing strict protocols to prevent potential spread.
Papers at the Catholic Shrine will be limited to the main Basilica, an unprecedented move that excludes the usual lakeside gatherings which draw thousands of pilgrims annually. “From the entrance, standard operating procedures (SOP) from washing hands, sanitising and social spacing have already been put in place,” stated Rev Fr Vincent Lubega, Rector of the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Namugongo. He further confirmed that police and health officials are collaborating to conduct screenings, including temperature checks, with nearby health facilities on standby.
The Catholic Church has officially cancelled national celebrations, directing the faithful to observe the day at their respective parishes. For those attending the shrine, Mass will follow a normal Sunday schedule within the Basilica, with attendees required to observe social distancing and refrain from the customary Sign of Peace involving handshakes. Pilgrims will be asked to leave immediately after Mass to prevent congregation.
At the Anglican site, only 200 participants, primarily clergy and officials, will be permitted for a single service, following conditional approval from the Ministry of Health. This marks a sharp contrast to previous years where large crowds gathered. Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba is expected to lead the service, which will be accessible to the wider public through virtual means.
President Museveni announced the postponement of national celebrations earlier, emphasizing the need to protect lives. The restrictions mean a significant departure from the vibrant atmosphere usually associated with Martyrs Day, which typically includes large business activities and a massive influx of both local and international pilgrims.
