Concerns are mounting over the whereabouts of Amuria District Woman Member of Parliament, Maggie Etilu, who has been missing since May 23rd. The legislator was reportedly last seen in Nakasero, Kampala, shortly after a visit to the home of former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, who is currently facing corruption allegations.

The disappearance has sparked significant worry among Etilu’s constituents in the Teso sub-region, fellow politicians, and her family, who are demanding answers from security agencies.

Allegations had surfaced suggesting that the first-term MP was being detained by the Special Forces Command (SFC) at a military facility. Soroti East MP Moses Attan publicly claimed Etilu was held at Kasenyi, describing her condition as “good” and the environment as “home-like” while undergoing interrogation.

However, the SFC has firmly refuted these claims. Major Denis Omara, spokesperson for the SFC, stated that there is no justification or offense linking Etilu to their unit, advising inquiries to be directed to the police.

Meanwhile, the Uganda Police Force has also stated that they have not confirmed whether Etilu is under arrest or where she might be held. Police spokesperson Rusoke Kituuma indicated that investigations are ongoing and more time is needed to verify the reports and ascertain any charges the MP might face.

The lack of concrete information has intensified public and political pressure, with figures like former Serere District Woman MP Alice Alaso Asianut publicly questioning the silence and urging for Etilu’s disclosure or production in court if charged.

This developing situation continues to fuel anxieties, as calls grow louder for security forces to clarify Hon. Etilu’s status and location. The Observer (Uganda) reported these denials on June 2, 2026.
