The High Court sitting in Fort Portal has handed down a five-year prison sentence to Moreen Natukunda, a 20-year-old woman convicted of kidnapping an infant. The crime occurred on April 25, 2025, when Natukunda abducted the one-month-old baby from Rwamwanja Health Centre IV in Nkoma-Katalyeba town council, Kamwenge district.

Natukunda, who was also a patient at the health facility attending to a relative, reportedly took advantage of the mother’s sleep to commit the offense. The alarm was raised when the distressed mother discovered her child was missing and alerted the facility’s staff.

Following the report to the police, an immediate search operation was initiated, leading to Natukunda’s swift apprehension and the safe recovery of the infant. The baby was subsequently reunited with its relieved mother.

Natukunda’s conviction followed her guilty plea and subsequent agreement with the prosecution on a plea bargain. The court sentenced her to five years imprisonment for each charge, but these sentences will be served concurrently, resulting in an effective five-year jail term.
