The national Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, originally slated to be animated by the Diocese of Kasese at Namugongo Catholic Shrine on June 3rd, have been cancelled due to the ongoing Ebola outbreak. Despite the disappointment for the thousands of pilgrims and the organizing committee who had finalized preparations, church leaders have confirmed that the faithful will still commemorate the Uganda Martyrs.
Bishop Francis Acquirinus Kibira Kambale of the Diocese of Kasese announced that the decision to cancel the large gathering was a necessary step to safeguard public health, following guidance from the Uganda Episcopal Conference. Instead of traveling to Namugongo, Catholics are encouraged to participate in Masses and prayer services held within their local parishes and outstations.
This shift to parish-level celebrations aims to balance spiritual obligations with vital health concerns. The Ebola outbreak, which has seen imported cases and an increase in surveillance, including border closures, has significantly impacted planned religious events. Several pilgrims from the Democratic Republic of Congo had already arrived in Kasese before the cancellation.
Bishop Kibira urged Christians to focus on the deeper meaning of Uganda Martyrs Day: reflecting on the courage, sacrifice, and faith of the martyrs, renewing their commitment to Christian values, and strengthening their relationship with God. He also called for continued prayer for the country and for health workers on the front lines of the Ebola response, reminding the faithful to adhere strictly to health guidelines.
The organizing committee, though initially shocked, is looking ahead to animating the celebrations next year. They plan to use this time to review and improve their preparations. While the large-scale national event was postponed, the spirit of commemoration will continue in local communities across the diocese, ensuring the martyrs’ legacy is honored while prioritizing safety.
