Community leaders from the Teso sub-region have publicly appealed for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the allegations surrounding former Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among. Under the banner of the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), the elders expressed their support for accountability and the diligent work of state agencies. However, they have raised concerns about what they perceive as mounting political pressure and public condemnation directed at Ms. Among before the conclusion of official inquiries.

In a statement released on May 28, senior advisor on ICU affairs, Mr. Alloch William Akoll, emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, transparency, and the fundamental principle of presumed innocence. The elders are urging investigators to proceed with fairness, ensuring that Ms. Among is afforded due process.

The ICU elders have specifically called upon President Yoweri Museveni to approach the matter with statesmanship, impartiality, and a focus on resolving political differences through dialogue and consensus. They voiced concerns about actions reportedly taken against Ms. Among during the ongoing investigations, such as asset freezes and travel restrictions, suggesting these measures could pre-emptively bias public perception.

These appeals come as joint security teams continue their investigations into allegations of illicit enrichment, corruption, and abuse of office. Searches have been conducted at properties linked to Ms. Among in Kampala, Wakiso, and Bukedea districts, with several high-value vehicles reportedly seized. The elders highlighted Ms. Among’s contributions to developmental projects in the Teso region, citing instances of significant donations, including medical equipment and agricultural machinery.

The Iteso Cultural Union affirmed their commitment to monitoring the situation closely and standing in solidarity with Ms. Among, aiming to foster a peaceful environment for the legal investigations while underscoring their dedication to a just and equitable Uganda where all regional contributions are respected.
