The Diocese of South Ankole has celebrated 10,287 individuals by bestowing upon them the title of “church pillar” in recognition of their significant support for the diocese’s development projects. This initiative comes as the broader Church of Uganda has temporarily halted the awarding of new lay canons and church elders due to ethical considerations surrounding these honorary positions.

Awardees were presented with certificates, badges, and gifts at a recent ceremony held at St Matthew’s Cathedral Kyamate. The recognition honors participants in a year-long fundraising campaign that has channeled resources into vital diocesan projects, including the construction of a new headquarters building.

This innovative recognition program was established following a decision by the trustees of the Province of the Church of Uganda to cease the installation of new canons and elders. Bishop Rt Rev Nathan Ahimbisibwe of South Ankole explained that while honorary titles are on hold, the contributions of development partners are too valuable to go unrecognized.

“People who support us every day are our great pillars and as a diocese we hold them dearly,” Bishop Ahimbisibwe stated. He highlighted that these “pillars” each contributed at least Shs500,000 through their respective parishes and archdeaconries during the Christian year.

The fundraising drive saw notable success, with Ms Scovia Sajja leading the pack by mobilizing over Shs130 million, and Mr Jomo Kindyomunda raising more than Shs130 million for church projects.

The diocese is currently undertaking the construction of a Shs700 million multi-storey office block, which will serve as its new headquarters and accommodate various facilities. Since its founding in 2012, the Diocese of South Ankole has been actively involved in diverse development efforts, including agricultural projects, irrigation, fish farming, and the establishment of educational and health services.

Bishop Ahimbisibwe also encouraged Christians to maintain a balance between supporting church development and nurturing their spiritual growth, emphasizing the importance of understanding scripture and seeking the Lord as their personal savior.
