The parliamentary Committee on Appointments has officially begun scrutinizing the 81 individuals nominated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for ministerial positions. This crucial exercise, designed to ensure the suitability of candidates for public office, is set to conclude swiftly, with the parliamentary session expected to wrap up by Tuesday, June 2, 2026.
The committee, under the leadership of Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth, with Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa serving as his deputy, commenced its work early Monday morning. The rigorous assessment began at 7:30 a.m., with several prominent nominees appearing before the committee on the first day.
Among those whose qualifications and suitability were under review were Crispus Kiyonga, nominated for the esteemed position of Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business in Parliament. Also presenting their case were Frank Tumwebaze, slated for the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, and Jonard Asiimwe, nominated to oversee Science, Technology, and Innovation in the Office of the President.
This vetting process is a cornerstone of parliamentary oversight. The Committee on Appointments is a standing committee tasked with the significant responsibility of thoroughly examining presidential nominees for senior government and judicial roles. Their decision to approve or reject candidates is vital for maintaining the integrity of public service.
The composition of the committee reflects a broad spectrum of parliamentary representation, including the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi, and Members of Parliament from various political parties and backgrounds, ensuring a comprehensive review.
Parliament has pledged transparency throughout the process, committing to share updates on the vetting proceedings via its official social media channels, including X, Instagram, and TikTok. This initiative aims to keep the public informed about the ministerial appointments.
