The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially endorsed Irene Nampala as their candidate for the upcoming Kalangala District Woman MP by-election. Nampala, the elder sister of the late MP Hellen Nakimuli, was chosen after a thorough vetting and ground survey process that evaluated 14 aspirants.
NUP’s Election Management Committee chairperson, Harriet Chemutai, announced Nampala’s selection, emphasizing that 60 percent of the final score was based on a ground survey to ensure the candidate resonated with the voters of Kalangala. Nampala secured 68 points, significantly ahead of her closest rival, Jesca Nassiwa Tusabe, who garnered 48.7 points.
Nampala stated that her decision to enter politics was prompted by consultations following her sister’s death. She aims to continue Nakimuli’s work, focusing on improving health services, educational opportunities, transportation, and empowerment programs for women and youth in the islands.
Her family expressed confidence in her ability to carry on Nakimuli’s legacy, citing her leadership and communication skills. Some residents have welcomed the nomination, seeing it as a continuation of their late MP’s vision, while others have expressed reservations, preferring candidates with more established grassroots connections.
The NRM party, however, sees Nampala’s nomination as an opportunity to reclaim the seat, believing their candidate has stronger visibility across the district. The by-election follows the passing of Hellen Nakimuli last month.
Nominations are slated for June 10-11, with campaigns running from June 12-22 and polling on June 24.
