Bank of Uganda Approves Standard Chartered's Retail Business Sale to Absa

The Bank of Uganda has given the green light for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda to divest its Wealth and Retail Banking (WRB) operations to Absa Bank Uganda Limited. This significant regulatory approval, announced jointly by both financial institutions on June 1, is seen as a testament to the stability and soundness of Uganda’s financial system and underscores Absa’s commitment to the market.

Standard Chartered’s decision is part of a broader strategic withdrawal from consumer-facing banking across several African nations. The bank is refocusing its efforts on its core strengths, including Corporate and Investment Banking, serving affluent, cross-border clients, and large corporations. This sale does not impact Standard Chartered’s corporate banking services in Uganda.

For Absa, this acquisition represents a strategic expansion, bolstering its retail and SME banking presence in Uganda. The deal will enhance Absa’s customer base and product offerings, positioning it for more direct competition with established local banks and supporting its pan-African growth objectives. Absa has stated that customers will experience no immediate changes to their daily banking, with continued access to services through existing channels.

While the Bank of Uganda’s approval is a critical step, the transaction is subject to the fulfillment of remaining conditions outlined in the sale agreement. This landmark deal signifies a major ownership transfer within Uganda’s banking sector, reflecting confidence in Absa’s capabilities and the resilience of the country’s financial landscape.
