The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is intensifying efforts to ensure all taxpayers fulfill their financial obligations before the close of the 2025/2026 fiscal year on June 30. Commissioner General John Rujoki Musinguzi has urged individuals and businesses to clear any outstanding tax dues and submit all pending returns promptly.
The URA is optimistic about reaching its ambitious revenue target of Shs36.7 trillion, but this hinges on the active participation of taxpayers. Musinguzi emphasized that timely compliance is a collective responsibility that directly fuels public services and national development.
To facilitate easier compliance, the URA has heavily invested in technology and service enhancements over the past year, a strategy that will continue into the next financial period. The authority’s Digital Strategy aims to streamline tax administration through instant services, reducing wait times and processing backlogs.
Musinguzi also highlighted the importance of filing tax returns on time, as it not only ensures compliance but also reduces the accrual of penalties. For taxpayers with existing arrears, the URA is offering a limited-time waiver on penalties and interest for voluntary disclosure and settlement of principal tax debts, including VAT, Pay As You Earn, and income tax, provided payments are made by June 30, 2026.
Taxpayers are advised to act proactively to avoid last-minute system congestion and potential penalties. The URA is prioritizing stakeholder engagement, tax education, and mediation as methods for revenue recovery, alongside increased surveillance at border points to combat smuggling.
