South Africa's World Cup Journey Hits Snag Over Visa Delays

The “Bafana Bafana” were scheduled to depart for their World Cup training base in Pachuca, Mexico on Sunday, but their charter flight was grounded at the last minute. The delay stems from outstanding visa applications for key members of the squad and delegation, an issue that has caused significant embarrassment and frustration.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie expressed his strong disapproval, calling the situation “embarrassing and grossly unfair” to the team. He has demanded a report from the South African Football Association (SAFA) and confirmation that action will be taken against those responsible for the administrative oversight. “We are being made to look like fools,” McKenzie stated.

SAFA released a statement acknowledging the “challenges regarding visas” and confirmed the team would not be able to travel as planned. The association is reportedly working tirelessly to resolve the situation and facilitate the team’s travel to Mexico City as swiftly as possible. In the interim, the squad will continue their training in Johannesburg.

This is not the first administrative hurdle for the team in their journey to the World Cup. South Africa nearly missed out on qualification after a match-fixing controversy involving an ineligible player, Teboho Mokoena, led to a victory being overturned. Despite this, they secured their spot in the finals, marking their first appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010.

The team is set to face co-hosts Mexico in their opening match on June 11, followed by fixtures against the Czech Republic in Atlanta and South Korea in Monterrey. The ongoing visa issues cast a shadow over their preparations for these crucial Group A games.
