Tragedy struck along the Soroti-Mbale highway on Saturday afternoon when John Okello, a teacher at Awoja Primary School, was fatally injured in a road accident. Okello, who taught primary three students, was reportedly hit from behind by a vehicle, registration UA 508CC, as he was crossing the road to reach the school.

The accident has highlighted long-standing safety concerns for residents living near the Awoja trading centre. Robert Etochu, the LC I chairperson of Apuuton village, expressed deep frustration regarding the persistent danger posed by speeding vehicles on this stretch of road.

“We have alerted the authorities to install speed humps to help reduce over-speeding, but nothing has been done to date. We continue to lose the lives of our people to speeding vehicles on this road,” Etochu stated. He indicated that the area has been the site of numerous accidents over the years.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the incident sustained several injuries and was transported to a hospital in Soroti City for medical attention. Traffic police in Soroti have initiated an investigation into the precise circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
