Lawmakers from the Busoga sub-region, representing a spectrum of political parties, have committed to fostering unity and cooperation to drive development and enhance services. This pledge comes after years where internal political infighting was seen as a significant impediment to the region’s progress and national influence.
During a recent gathering, the parliamentary group, chaired by Luuka South MP Stephen Kisa, acknowledged past disunity among representatives, which they believe has hampered collective efforts to advance Busoga’s interests. Kisa highlighted that new leadership in the 12th Parliament offers an opportunity to forge stronger collaborations with the Busoga Kingdom and mobilize support for regional initiatives.
The commitment was underscored at a graduation ceremony for health professionals in Iganga District, where legislators met with the Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Nadiope Gabula IV. Opposition lawmakers, such as Bukooli North MP Jamali Ayagalachi Mukuve, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the resolve to work together irrespective of party affiliation to tackle poverty and underdevelopment, which they noted persists despite the region’s resources.
First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, also the Woman MP for Kamuli District, urged the MPs to establish structured coordination to improve resource mobilization and effectively monitor government programs like the Parish Development Model and Emyooga. She stressed the importance of accountability and collaboration to ensure development initiatives benefit the intended communities.
This push for unity follows intense political rivalries that have characterized the region. The new MPs face the critical task of translating their vow of cooperation into tangible improvements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and household incomes for the people of Busoga.
