Kitara FC is rapidly shedding its ‘small club’ image, demonstrated by their hard-fought 2-1 victory over SC Villa to claim their second Stanbic Uganda Cup. The final, held at the Fufa Technical Center in Njeru, saw Kitara overcome the historically dominant SC Villa, who were seeking their tenth title.
The match was a dramatic affair, characterized by early own goals from both sides, Patrick Kaddu and Misi Ssemugera, within a minute of each other. The decisive moment came early in the second half when Kitara’s Jimmy Kalema scored the winning goal. Kitara then held on for victory, weathering SC Villa’s attempts to equalize, including strong penalty appeals that were waved away by the referee.
The officiating decisions, particularly a denied penalty for SC Villa in the second half, incensed a significant portion of the crowd, predominantly SC Villa fans. Their frustration extended beyond the pitch, with some fans directing insults and throwing objects at FUFA president Moses Magogo. Issues with the online ticketing system also contributed to the unrest among fans upon arrival.
On the field, SC Villa struggled to create clear-cut chances against a resolute Kitara defense, marshaled by experienced players like Murushid Jjuuko and Isa Lumu. Key SC Villa attackers were effectively neutralized or substituted due to injury, limiting their offensive threat.
This triumph follows Kitara’s impressive semi-final victory over holders Vipers, achieved on away goals. With continued backing from club president Deo Kasozi and sponsorship from Plascon, Kitara appears poised for further success, aiming to make their mark on Ugandan football’s top tier.
