Kanungu District, located on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is implementing stringent measures to enhance its Ebola preparedness. The District Task Force and security committee have decided to indefinitely suspend weekly markets, bars, and discos, along with all unauthorized public gatherings. This decision aims to mitigate the risk of cross-border Ebola transmission.
According to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Ambrose Mwesigye Amanyire, the restrictions were prompted by identified gaps in border security during a recent task force meeting. While daily markets and public institutions will remain open, they are mandated to enforce handwashing and screening under strict security oversight. Public transport operations will also be subject to increased monitoring to ensure adherence to Ebola prevention guidelines.
Border access has been significantly tightened. Only essential travelers, including cargo vehicle crews, registered refugees, and security personnel, will be permitted entry after undergoing rigorous health screenings. Furthermore, all commercial establishments, banks, and businesses are required to install thermo guns and handwashing stations at their entrances for mandatory visitor screening.
Safe burial protocols will be strictly enforced under the supervision of health and security officials to minimize infection risks during funerals. The district is also intensifying public awareness campaigns through radio broadcasts and community outreach to educate residents on Ebola prevention and response.
The RDC urged community members, business owners, and local leaders to cooperate with the directives and immediately report any suspected Ebola symptoms, such as fever, bleeding, or vomiting, to the nearest health facility. He emphasized Kanungu’s crucial role as a gateway district in preventing the spread of the virus.
These measures come as Uganda’s Ministry of Health reported two new Ebola cases in Kampala, bringing the national total to nine confirmed cases, including one death.
