Commissioner Hellen Seku of the National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC) has underscored the significance of patriotism training in formal education, asserting it as a vital method for instilling core values and fostering a sense of national responsibility in young Ugandans. Speaking at a recent pass-out ceremony at King’s College, Budo, Seku urged participants to embrace discipline, hard work, and a profound love for their nation.

“It is our time to be ideologically sharpened, change our mindset to positive thinking, and be responsible, hardworking at all times, and avoid harmful behaviors,” Seku stated, addressing the 2,513 graduates. She conveyed greetings from President Yoweri Museveni, whom she referred to as the “Chief Patriot,” and highlighted the program’s integration into the national curriculum.

The week-long Patriotism Ideological Development Course, which included civic education and lectures from UPDF officers, aims to impart values like ethical conduct, mutual respect, financial literacy, and a solid understanding of Uganda’s history and economy. Seku emphasized that this program is compulsory and examinable, crucial for providing students with essential knowledge beyond academics.

Furthermore, Seku cautioned against destructive actions like school strikes, advocating instead for patriotism-trained students to become models of discipline and peaceful resolution. She credited the patriotism program for a noticeable reduction in strikes in educational institutions, including universities.

The headteacher of King’s College Budo, Mr. Godfrey Kasamba, echoed these sentiments, thanking the government for the transformative program. He reiterated the school’s commitment to nurturing responsible leaders and stressed that true patriotism is demonstrated through action, integrity, and service to national development.

Student representative Mwesigwa Amos pledged that the graduates would become ambassadors for patriotism, promoting unity, hard work, and good conduct within their communities. The event was attended by several government and military officials, including Maj. Gen. Sabiiti Muzeyi and Colonel Night Ikiriza, reinforcing the national importance of the initiative.
