The Uganda Cubs, Uganda’s U-17 national football team, were recently honored at a celebratory dinner for achieving their second consecutive qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup. The event, held at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel, served as a moment to recognize the players’ hard work and to reflect on the federation’s commitment to youth football development.

This remarkable achievement sees Uganda join five other African nations – Egypt, Mali, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Morocco – in the prestigious tournament set to take place in Qatar later this year. The Cubs secured their spot by finishing third in their U-17 Africa Cup of Nations group and then triumphing over Ghana in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 2-2 draw in regulation time in their qualification playoff.

Officials from the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa), including Executive Secretary Ronnie Kalema, highlighted the importance of youth development programs like the Fufa Juniors League and the Odilo Primary School competition. They emphasized that consistent qualification for global tournaments is a testament to strategic planning and execution, moving beyond mere celebratory noise to tangible on-pitch success.

The dinner was attended by various stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, the National Council of Sports, various schools, and football academies. Coaches and academy directors also spoke about the growing opportunities for young Ugandan talent, with some players from previous U-17 teams already making moves to European clubs. The parents of players shared emotional accounts of their children’s dedication and the pride in witnessing their dreams unfold on a global stage.

Captain Owen Mukisa echoed the team’s commitment, acknowledging the sacrifices made and promising to represent Uganda with pride at the World Cup. Fufa President Moses Magogo reiterated the federation’s long-term vision of becoming a dominant force in African football, underpinned by a comprehensive youth development strategy that includes scouting in 46 districts and a structured football curriculum.
