A tense atmosphere enveloped Rukungiri Municipality on Thursday as municipal authorities, heavily supported by security personnel, commenced the demolition of numerous structures. The operation, aimed at clearing road reserves and removing dilapidated buildings, left business owners struggling to salvage their property or watching helplessly as their livelihoods were reduced to rubble.

The enforcement drive began at Ntugamo Stage and moved along Independence Road, affecting areas like Go-down, Kihindi, Katerera, and Kinyasano. Structures including the perimeter wall of Bliss Coffee Haven Hotel were among those brought down.

Some property owners expressed dismay, claiming their structures had received official approval. Mr. Patrick Kamugisha stated that his house and a hotel perimeter wall were constructed with permits from the Rukungiri Municipal Physical Planner’s office. Similarly, Mr. Xavier Ndyanabo lamented the demolition of his perimeter wall, which he argued was not marked for removal during the initial survey, preventing him from relocating it.

Traders like Ms. Petty Twinomujuni reported facing “total loss” due to the abrupt disruption of her business, appealing to local leaders for intervention.

However, municipal officials defended the operation. Mr. Vastine Kenganzi, the Rukungiri Municipal Council Physical Planner, asserted that affected individuals had been duly notified and given ample time to relocate, with an estimated 70% complying voluntarily. Ms. Merina Kekiijo, the Municipal Civil Engineer, added that the demolitions are crucial for enhancing the town’s aesthetic appeal and security.

The operation is scheduled to continue for five days until all marked structures are cleared, with officials urging citizens to adhere to proper building procedures.
