In Bweyogerere, the Ramadan Foundation has brought renewed hope and independence to numerous residents through the distribution of mobility carts. This initiative, spearheaded by the local non-profit, aims to address the significant challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in accessing transportation and maintaining their livelihoods.

One of the beneficiaries, 72-year-old Matovu, had his life drastically altered by a stroke and a severe leg fracture, leaving him with limited mobility and financial struggles. The donation of a hand-cranked mobility cart has been life-changing for him. “It is going to help me in my day-to-day work, even if it means going to the market. It is spacious enough to carry foodstuffs and other things. I feel like I have got my energy back,” Matovu shared, his spirits visibly lifted.

Mariam Nakafu, a former entrepreneur who had to abandon her business due to debilitating leg injuries, also received a cart. “This cart has come at the exact time when I need it most. Now I can move freely without depending on anyone to help me. I feel hopeful again,” she expressed.

The impact of these carts extends beyond mere convenience; they represent a crucial step towards reclaiming dignity and financial autonomy in a society where public infrastructure often fails to accommodate PWDs. For Jamala Abdulsuliman, a refugee who resorted to crawling due to financial constraints, the mobility cart is a symbol of his restored dignity and ability to move within his community with confidence.

Ramadan Foundation CEO, Janat Sebunya, stated that the initiative is a direct response to the systemic neglect faced by PWDs. “Our mission goes beyond charity; it is about empowerment. We want these families to know they are not alone. Even the smallest piece of targeted support can completely rewrite someone’s life story,” Sebunya asserted.

The foundation also provided food packages and clothing alongside the carts, underscoring their holistic approach to community support. The beneficiaries were urged by the foundation’s chairperson, Justin Kanyike, to utilize the carts as tools for self-reliance and economic rebuilding, not for resale.

This distribution drive highlights the vital role of civil society organizations in bridging gaps in social welfare and empowering marginalized communities for a more inclusive future.
