Kenyan police have apprehended eight students suspected of orchestrating a devastating fire at Utumishi Girls’ Academy Senior School. The blaze, which erupted in the early hours of Thursday, tragically resulted in the deaths of 16 female students and left 79 others injured. Authorities have identified the arrested individuals as persons of interest in the planning and execution of the suspected arson. They are currently in police custody.

This incident highlights a recurring issue in Kenyan educational institutions. Researchers indicate that fires in schools are not uncommon, often stemming from student protests against strict disciplinary measures or inadequate living conditions. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed the arrests, stating that preliminary efforts led to the identification of the eight students.

Further investigations revealed critical lapses in safety protocols and staff oversight. Education Minister Julius Ogamba disclosed that two teachers had reportedly been alerted to the students’ alleged intentions but failed to intervene. The school also faced scrutiny for dormitory overcrowding and a locked emergency exit, which likely exacerbated the disaster.

In response to the tragedy, the government has dissolved the school’s board of management. The minister assured that appropriate legal and disciplinary actions will be pursued against any staff members found to have neglected their responsibilities. This incident echoes past school fires in Kenya, including one in 2024 that killed 21 students and the infamous 2001 Kyanguli Secondary School fire where 67 boys perished due to arson.
